The Politician, Ryan Murphy's latest series on Netflix, is about several disparate topics. The story of an entitled white boy who believes he deserves to be President of the United States has its roots in several areas, from our Presidential history to Murphy's own TV legacy of smarmy elitists. The problem is whether the show can blend everything into a cohesive narrative. Yet after watching all eight episodes of The Politician, I realized a cohesive narrative is unnecessary. The Netflix dramedy follows Payton Hobart (Ben Platt), a soon-to-be high school senior who has big dreams that include attending Harvard, nabbing the U.S. Presidency, and winning his high school presidential election. When his running mate, the sensitive and sweet River (David Corenswet) commits suicide, it sends Payton on a sinister path which involves high-school musicals, Munchausen moms, and possibly murder.
