The casting process in Hollywood is a difficult, complicated process that gets more and more so depending on the size of the picture. Blockbusters are produced by teams and multiple studios and all those people have opinions. Sometimes that works out, but just as often, movies are ruined and feelings are hurt. It's a delicate dance.Hollywood history is full of stories of unfulfilled promise, but we're more interested in the opposite. We like when the unpopular casting choice gets the movie and proceeds to prove all the doubters wrong. Studios love to minimize risk. That's why so many sequels are made and so many big stars keep getting movies made. If something, or someone, is bankable, that's often all that matters. Luckily, studios aren't in complete control of movies. Directors very often hold sway in conference rooms and their opinions are sometimes the only ones that matter. On The Godfather, for instance, director Frances Ford Coppola fought for and got his top two choices for the father and son roles of Vito and Michael Corleone. The studio, Paramount, didn't like either but Coppola got his way and, in the end, was proven correct.
